Enel actively participates in electricity distribution in Chile through its subsidiary Enel Distribución Chile in which it directly and indirectly holds a 99.1% stake.
Enel Distribución Chile is the country's principal electricity distributor, with over 1.8 million customers. It serves a very dense concession area that accounts for a significant portion of the country's population, covering 2,065 km2 in 33 districts of the Santiago Metropolitan Region and representing some 40% of the country’s total energy sales.
Enel Distribución Chile also has two subsidiaries, Luz Andes and Empresa Eléctrica de Colina, which take its total concession area to 2,118 km2.
It provides the power needed by thousands of homes, industries and businesses for their growth and development, evolving together with the city and its inhabitants, helping them to achieve the standards of living that correspond to a modern, dynamic and inclusive cosmopolitan city and allowing Santiago to begin to experience today the life of a city of the future.
The challenge today is to open up power to new uses, contributing new products and services that improve quality of life in thousands of homes, facilitating electrical heating, smart metering and self-generation. This new vision also aims to reduce pollution on our cities by incorporating clean and efficient electric public transportation, low-consumption lighting and efficient energy solutions in schools, hospitals, businesses, factories and public and private institutions.
One example of this is Enel Distribución Chile’s installation of 50,000 intelligent meters in Santiago. This represents a quantitative technological leap forward in that the new system incorporates infrastructure with the capacity for two-way communication and digitized and interconnected networks as well as providing clients with more information on the basis of which they can actively take the best consumption decisions.
The new system is also more convenient and safer for clients in that it reduces the need for visits to their homes to read meters or reconnect supply after faults or outages, tasks that can now be carried out remotely.
